0:08 I'm Dan, and this is my wife, Martene.
0:12 I actually bought my first bike at the Hostel Shoppe in
0:16 1975, when they were first on Main Street,
0:22 and since then we’ve bought a lot of bikes.
0:24 We have.
0:26 I've only been riding about five years,
0:30 and this is my first year on a fat trike.
0:32 I've only been riding trikes for five years.
0:34 Yeah, but I love it.
0:36 You know, I started riding a lot back,
0:40 in the 90s, and I rode to work every day.
0:44 And I did that until I retired.
0:45 So, yeah, I've been riding a long time.
0:48 And then, we bought Martene a trike about 5 or 6 years ago.
0:53 Her first one.
0:54 And then
0:56 we just kept upgrading. Yep.
0:58 Now we got the good ones. Yeah.
1:01 Oh, you know, going on a lot of trips and stuff.
1:03 So we got some nicer trikes.
1:11 Well, I was jealous watching him still bike all year.
1:14 And I'm sitting at home, and part of it was finding a trike that would fit me.
1:19 I'm kind of short, and
1:21 I thought I was strong enough now to do it and, you know my legs.
1:25 For me, it was just.
1:28 I just can't sit on a trainer. If I'm pedaling,
1:31 I want to be moving, and I don't - I don't mind being outside. The snow,
1:35 the cold doesn't bother me. Yeah.
1:37 So this is. This is perfect.
1:39 Yeah. It's nice out.
1:39 It doesn't matter how slippery it is.
1:41 You don't have to worry too much.
1:44 But, yeah, it keeps you off the trainer.
1:47 I'm loving it.
1:49 When did we get this?
1:50 Ladies night.
1:51 I bought it, and I have over 200 miles already, so I'm pretty excited.
1:56 Yeah, I'm excited to ride it in the summer, too.
2:00 So, yeah, that was one of the big reasons we wanted to get that for her too, was
2:05 we're on the rougher gravel trails,
2:07 but, you know, we're going to take these to Standing Rocks.
2:12 We'll do the Green Goblin on this.
2:14 Yeah, that'll be fun.
2:20 Well, this one, this is my second fat trike.
2:24 The first one I had, wasn't an e-bike, so.
2:29 Yeah, if you were plowing through 4 or 5 inches
2:32 of snow, it, you know, it was tough.
2:35 So this made it a little bit more fun.
2:36 I could go a little bit further.
2:38 And I think when I bought this one, I don't remember if Azub even had the
2:44 yeah, I
2:44 don't know if they did either. - If they had fat trikes then or not.
2:47 I didn't remember seeing anything but ICE. Yep.
2:50 Full fat. Yeah.
2:51 So that's kind of why I bought it.
2:53 You know, I like it. It's good.
2:56 Mine's a little lower.
2:57 You're not.
2:58 Not quite as as tippy.
3:02 And it fits me.
3:04 Yeah. They're both really nice.
3:06 They're very nice trikes.
3:06 Yeah.
3:12 Oh, Joy.
3:13 Well, yeah. Lots of joy, really.
3:16 I mean, we don't we don't ski, we don't snowboard, we don't ice skate.
3:20 We don't, no.
3:21 So, yeah, this is it, you know, and it's something we both enjoy.
3:25 We can do it together - And we can do it together.
3:28 You know, being both of us retired.
3:31 Right.
3:32 You know - - And it was this or Planet Fitness
3:34 So I went with the trike.
3:40 Well in the summer,
3:43 almost every day. He probably goes every day
3:46 I go, what do you say? 4 to 5 times a week.
3:50 And then on these.
3:52 Yeah.
3:52 When, you know, typically, you know, we wait for the nicer days,
3:56 I'll go in temperatures if it's around 20 or above, I'm fine.
3:59 Yeah.
4:00 But, you know, for like Martene. - I'm going two
4:04 maybe three days a week, you know, maybe anywhere from.
4:07 Sometimes the rides are only ten miles.
4:09 10 to 20 miles in.
4:11 Something like that.
4:12 Yeah.
4:17 Boots and gloves,
4:20 without a doubt. Yeah.
4:22 Keep your hands, your hands and your feet warm.
4:24 Yeah. The rest of you will be fine.
4:26 45NRTH Gloves. Yeah.
4:29 These are good boots. I like them.
4:30 They're very good boots.
4:37 Well, you know,
4:39 when it's really icy out on this, you know, you just slide around,
4:43 you know, on a regular bike, you know, you - even with studs on my fat bike,
4:48 you can go down and the older you get, the more it hurts.
4:52 So I don't know, I like doing both.
4:55 You know, I'll ride anything with pedals
4:58 For me, I don't think I was ready in the beginning.
5:01 I don't think I could have ridden one.
5:02 No. It took me, I think, you know, building up my stamina
5:05 and all that over the last few years has really helped.
5:09 Yeah.
5:10 So, you know, she’s - you've been on some long rides,
5:11 you know, 50... 55 is my longest, you know, so we get out there a little bit.
5:17 Yeah.
5:19 Well Dan has
5:19 been around the world three times.
5:22 That's how much he bikes - that’s since 2001. Yep.
5:31 Yes. Yes.
5:32 For us,
5:33 Absolutely. Yeah.
5:34 You know, we, we have a motorhome and.
5:37 Yeah.
5:37 Yeah.
5:38 Now we're just going, you know, motorhome with a trailer.
5:41 We bring our dogs or trikes and,
5:44 you know, pull the dogs in the Burley and life is good.
5:47 Yeah, it's nice because we can just jump in that thing and go,
5:51 yeah, anytime we want.
5:53 So he's just refitting the trailer now to get these babies in there.
6:02 Anyone can do it.
6:05 Anyone can do it. That's it. Yeah.
6:07 I think if you get out there and try it, you'll love it.
We sat down recently with long-time Hostel Shoppe customers Dan and Martene to talk about how their fat trikes have changed how they ride! Watch the interview on YouTube.
